This course aims to familiarize the student with English literature and culture from its earliest beginnings through the early nineteenth century. We will read prose and poetry of different historical periods -- from Medieval times, and through the Renaissance, the Enlightenment and the Romantic era We will examine historical , cultural and literary contexts and developments and examine the writings of the major authors whose works shaped and reflected the thinking of their times.
The aim of the course is for the student to gain familiarity with key literary texts of English literature from the Medieval period through the Romantic era -- to be able to discuss and analyze these texts through an awareness of major themes, historical contexts and linguistic developments.
The authors studied in the course will include the Beowulf poet, Chaucer, Shakespeare, John Donne, Milton, Swift, Pope, Charlotte Smith, Mary Robinson, Wordsworth, Coleridge and Shelley.
The lessons will be based on lectures, close readings of the texts and class discussion.
Attendance, weekly reading, and class discussion. Likewise, there will be one midterm assignment to be done at home, plus a final exam.
