The aim of this course is to enable the student to develop her or his oral skills through a focus on fluency and grammatical accuracy in using the English language. Attention will be given to developing vocabulary and to the awareness of the different registers of speech (informal, semi-formal, formal) as well as to the practice of reading aloud.
Each lesson will consist of three or four parts:
- An open, free discussion on current events and on personal experiences during the previous week, along with a newspaper article (which I will bring) that relates to an interesting or relevant topical concern or event.
- A structured task for active participation by the students, such as role play exercises, group work, etc…
- A discussion based on a short reading assignment that will be read prior to class. In the first semester, the reading assignments will include famous speeches and texts about teaching and education as well as Henry James's novella, The Turn of the Screw, which will be read in short weekly segments throughout the entire year.
- The students' oral presentations will (of course!) form an important part of the lesson.
The course will emphasize active participation and class discussion, as well as pair or group work. The student will also be required to read short literary texts in advance of the lesson to prepare for class discussions.
